La depresión es un trastorno del estado de ánimo caracterizado por la presencia de las siguientes conductas, que afectan a distintas esferas de la vida del individuo:
Alteraciones en el estado de ánimo: Tristeza, dificultades para sentir, irritabilidad…
Alteraciones motivacionales y motoras: inhibición de la conducta, reducción y/o deterioro de las relaciones interpersonales
Alteraciones cognitivas: creencias inadecuadas, alteraciones de la memoria, atención y concentración.
Alteraciones psicofisiológicas como alteraciones del sueño, fatiga, disminución de la actividad física, pérdida de apetito, molestias corporales difusas
Tratamiento
Existen cuatro áreas que exigen especial atención en el tratamiento de la depresión: (1) Control del riesgo de suicidio (2) Mejora del estado de ánimo: modificación de pensamientos y activación conductual (3) Cambios en el entorno.
En el tratamiento de la depresión se utiliza la terapia cognitiva conductual, siendo ésta el tratamiento psicológico más eficaz tanto en las formas más graves como en las menos graves.
